How to Successfully Open & Close a Bar

Before I begin with this helpful hint, I would like to just point out that I have never done this before.  The maximum amount of time I’ve spent in a bar was this St. Patrick’s Day, but we fell short of our goal.  At the 11th hour we departed the pub.(11am - 10pm-ish).  Follow these steps to pick up where I fell.

  1. Do not attempt to open & close a bar on a holiday, like St. Patrick’s Day. This is simply because the service will be fed up, and there will be live entertainment the entire time you are trying to perform the feat.
    - The thing you have to understand is that noise can do you in just as much as the alcohol can.  11 hours of loud celtic tunes could very well make your head ring so badly that you’ll want to bail on the night.
  2. Do not attempt to open & close a popular bar with lots of people.
Lots of people equal lots of body heat.  And even if you’re sitting at a booth you’ll soon start sweating and this can be a deterrent to your goal.
  3. Plan your day, and practice. Randomly selecting a day and trying to go for the goal will probably end in failure.  Choose your day ahead of time and make sure you have the next day off to recover.  And it wouldn’t hurt to plan this in a bar enjoying some frothy goodness.
  4. Bring tylenol. Even if you’ve avoided the trendy hot spots and have chosen a slower day, a sudden headache could do you in faster than the ale you’re consuming.
  5. Drink pitchers. You’ll save money if you drink pitchers of beer over pints.
  6. For ever other pitcher order a glass of water. Hydration is so very important to keep you moving through the day so be sure to drink water as well as your booze.
  7. Don’t do it alone. Have a buddy there who’s just as stoked about finishing the day as you are. Never underestimate the power of keeping positive.
  8. Be social. Enjoy the company of others who may be sitting around you.  This will keep you going through those difficult hours.
  9. Energy drinks. You may find yourself slipping around 6:00pm.  Time to power up!  Order a red bull and nurse it for a bit.  This should get your energy back up to keep plowing through.
  10. Have fun. Drinking and being social is all about having fun and being friendly.  Enjoy your time at the bar.

Happy drinking!
